Awake & Dreaming Announce Debut Album Inevitable
Ten tracks about staying human in a world built to numb you. Intimate pianos. Walls of distortion. Lead singles “Underwater” (September 18) and “Rewire” (October 2). Mixed by Jay Dufour (9x Juno). Mastered by João Carvalho. Limited vinyl and a 10-city Ontario and Quebec tour.
Waterloo, ON, September 6, 2026. Awake & Dreaming will release their debut album, Inevitable, on Friday, October 16, 2026. Ten tracks, 48 minutes, self-released on limited vinyl and every streaming platform. Two singles lead the way: “Underwater” on September 18 and “Rewire” on October 2. The band plays ten cities across Ontario and Quebec from September 17, closing at The Rivoli in Toronto on October 10, so the record will be on merch tables before it is online.
Inevitable is a piano record that keeps turning into a guitar record. Sasha Kristoff sings close to the microphone and the band holds back, sometimes for two full minutes, before the distortion arrives and changes what the song was about. Canadian Beats described the move as “a quiet confession turning into a widescreen catharsis.” The ten tracks argue with each other: the machines we built against what they cannot reach. Half the record runs a technology thread, from “part of the machine” on the opener “I U Me,” through “Rewire,” where the dopamine loop becomes a chorus, to “Faceless,” which chants “these are the new gods” over a church organ. The other half is 2 a.m. and domestic. “Underwater” floats instead of dropping. “Can’t Sleep,” a love song about lying awake, is the first thing the band ever wrote. “Event Horizon” closes the album in awe rather than dread.
The sequencing is the story. Track 1 opens with “part of the machine.” Track 10 ends looking past the stars at what is still possible. Ten songs about staying human in a world built to numb you, and the band’s one request to writers is the obvious one: listen front to back.
Inevitable was produced by Awake & Dreaming, mixed by Jay Dufour, a nine-time Juno Award winner (July Talk, Finger Eleven, Billy Talent), and mastered by João Carvalho (Rush, The Tragically Hip, Alexisonfire). The band is Sasha Kristoff (vocals, piano), Stefan Schneider (guitar), Phil Lee (bass) and Ryan Dugal (drums). Their singles to date have earned more than 50 reviews from 37 outlets across 11 countries and 280K+ Spotify streams. They have opened for Rough Trade at Toronto’s El Mocambo and played The Delancey in New York.
One ask: listen to the whole album before you quote. It was made with vinyl in mind. We would rather an honest pass than a polite review, so only take this on if the record genuinely lands for you.

“Underwater”
Out September 18, 2026
The album’s 2 a.m. self-talk session about letting go of what is dragging you down. “Let it go or let it swallow you whole, like a whale floating too far underwater.” Massive and alone, calling out in a code nobody hears.
There is no drop. The song floats. Choruses at 0:55 and 2:01; from 2:41 the water rises and the words stop.
“Rewire”
Out October 2, 2026
The dopamine loop we live inside, turned into a chorus. “Inspire me. Desire me. Admire me. Rewire me” repeats until it curdles into “I’m bored.” The bridge flips the mantra into the confession underneath it: “Rewire me so I can feel again.”
Track 2, directly after the opener’s “part of the machine.” The album’s technology thread made physical.

- 05Cold Shoulder4:25A whispered taunt answered by a riot chant. Held-down verses, then the drop at 2:20 trades “go on, give me the cold shoulder” for “come on, give us.” From 2:52 the bridge stacks crowd, organ and guitar under “I’m gonna dance in the street while it’s burning” until the band cuts out at 4:19 and one voice finishes the chant alone.

- 07Lights Down Low4:48Domestic verses (blow the candles out, kiss the kids goodbye) under a chorus that zooms all the way out: “When the lights go down and the curtains close, who are you after the show?” Love as the anchor, and the worry of letting go.
- 08Can’t Sleep7:05The first song the band ever wrote, and its love song. Seven minutes of lying awake while the world tilts: the lead vocal stays hopeful, the backing vocals carry the fear. The opening line is the whole song, “Baby, I’m getting tired but I can’t sleep at night.”
- 09Faceless5:42Opens on a church organ. AI in the present tense: “You cannot face what you’ve let out of the box.” The chorus builds in four phases, clean, guitar, layered chant, full harmony, gaining power the way the thing it describes does. “These are the new gods. Bow down to the faceless.”
- 10Event Horizon3:49The closer, and the answer to “Faceless.” Supernovas, colliding black holes, symphonies in our minds. Where track 9 is dread, this is awe: the point of no return as a promise. The record ends on “It’s within our grasp.”
