Awake & Dreaming’s “Lights Down Low”: Joy and Parental Worry in One Song
The focus track from debut album Inevitable sets a child’s birthday party against the question every parent carries, then lifts it on a real 8,000-pipe church organ. Mixed by Jay Dufour (9x Juno). Mastered by João Carvalho. Out now on every platform.
Waterloo, ON, October 19, 2026. “Lights Down Low” is the focus track from Awake & Dreaming’s debut album Inevitable, out now since October 16. It is the most story-driven song on the record: a parent at a child’s birthday party, watching the candles go out and wondering about the world that child is walking into. Joy and parental worry in one song, carried home at the end by a real 8,000-pipe church organ recorded in Kitchener, Ontario.
What the song is about
The verses of “Lights Down Low” stay at home. “Put on a smile. Blow the candles all out.” Then “Kiss the kids goodbye. Send them on their way.” Between them, the song zooms out to one question: “When the lights go down and the curtains close, who are you after the show?” The choruses are the moments when things fall out of control, deliberately ordinary ones: a toast where “you say too much,” an engine that stalls out of nowhere. The parent thinks about their own mistakes and hopes the child gets through theirs. That hope is the bridge: “Can’t shake these memories. Don’t want them for you. When you’re frozen in freefall please come through.” Then the song lands back on the line it opened with. It is not self-pity. It is the worry that comes with loving someone, and the encouragement underneath it.
How it was made
“Lights Down Low” was written late, on purpose. About three quarters of the way through making Inevitable, Sasha Kristoff and Stefan Schneider laid the songs out as a beginning, a middle and an end and found three gaps: a fast song, an ending, and a song entirely about people and family, with no technology at the centre. That third gap became “Lights Down Low,” one of the last three songs finished, alongside “Rewire” and “Event Horizon.” Its lyric took longer to get right than any other on the record. An acoustic guitar carries the verses at home. The electric guitar part took a long time to find. The first chorus lands at 0:57. At 2:52 everything drops out for about thirty seconds, and at 3:22 the organ and a choir rise together, the loudest and brightest stretch of the song. At 4:25 it comes back to the candles.
The organ is real. It is the roughly 8,000-pipe instrument at New Apostolic Church in Kitchener. Gary Schmidt, the church’s organist, maintains it. He is also the band’s piano tuner, and he got them in. Schneider recorded the part at the console in a single day. That session and Schmidt’s reed organ on “Event Horizon” were the last recordings made for the album: after about two years of synths, guitars and effects, the final sounds on Inevitable came from two old mechanical instruments played by hand and foot.
Where it sits on the record
“Lights Down Low” is track 7 of 10, the second song on side two of the vinyl. It follows “Underwater,” a 2 a.m. conversation with yourself and one of the album’s lowest points, and it is the record’s human song: no screens, no machines, just a family. The band calls the album’s push and pull duality, and it is what the name means, present in the moment while imagining what could be. Here the two sides sit at the same table: the joy of the party in the room, and the worry about everything beyond it. After it, “Can’t Sleep” carries the story into the comfort two people find in each other.
All ten songs on Inevitable were written and arranged by Sasha Kristoff and Stefan Schneider. The album was produced by Awake & Dreaming, mixed by Jay Dufour, the 9-time Juno Award winner behind July Talk, Finger Eleven and Billy Talent, and mastered by João Carvalho (Rush, The Tragically Hip, Alexisonfire). “Lights Down Low” is the album version, with no edit.
Awake & Dreaming have drawn press in twelve countries and more than 300,000 streams. On October 8 they opened for Blue Rodeo in Owen Sound before a sold-out crowd of 3,100, two days before the ten-city Inevitable Tour of Ontario and Quebec closed at The Rivoli in Toronto. In September, CBC News ran a video feature on the tour and CBC Radio One’s The Morning Edition in Kitchener-Waterloo had the band in studio. Inevitable is out now on every platform, on CD, and on limited vinyl signed by Sasha Kristoff and hand-numbered.
“‘Lights Down Low’ stands out with its rich songwriting, probably our favourite moment in the album.”

“Can’t shake these memories
“Lights Down Low,” bridge
Don’t want them for you
When you’re frozen in freefall
Please come through”
Lights Down Low is the song that took longest to get the lyrics right, and the most story-driven track on the record: a parent at a child’s birthday, imagining the world the child is entering. The verse is at home, calm. Then it asks who you are when it’s said and done, who you’ll be in the moments that matter. The choruses are the moments things fall out of control, a speech that goes horribly wrong, an engine that stalls out of nowhere. Then the organ and the choir come in to say those are moments to rise to. The song is wholesome to the core.

Lyrics
Put on a smile. Blow the candles all out Turn another page. Who’s keeping track now?
When the lights go down and the curtains close Who are you after the show? When the storm has passed and the battle’s won Who are you when it’s said and done?
When you raise your glass And you say too much You can’t pretend When you’re on the run Who are you when it’s said and done
Kiss the kids goodbye. Send them on their way Out of view out of the frame. We’re just a call away
When the lights go down and the curtains close Who are you after the show? When the storm has passed and the battle’s won Who are you when it’s said and done?
When there’s no reward And your wires fray The engine stalls When your breath runs thin Who are you when it’s said and done?
When the lights come up and the crowd goes home Did you take to the stage? Did you hold your own? Can’t shake these memories. Don’t want them for you When you’re frozen in freefall please come through
Put on a smile. Blow the candles all out

What the press has said about “Lights Down Low”
Sasha sings it like she’s talking to you from an armchair with a blanket over her knees, half-volume, nowhere to rush. You could dance to this barefoot on a carpet.
Loudness, in its Inevitable review, September 9, 2026Of all the tracks on Inevitable, it felt like
Sleeping Bag Studios (Canada), October 17, 2026Lights Down Low
was the real unsung hero of the lineup…the kind of song that maybe everyone doesn’t even really notice at first, until they do.The track feels considerably more euphoric, while still retaining a beautiful sense of melancholy.
Motel Void (Europe), September 16, 2026The most compelling element lies in its lyrics, which question the identity hidden behind appearances. The song asks who we become when the show ends and the applause disappears.
