Awake & Dreaming will release their debut album, Inevitable, on Friday, October 16, 2026. Ten tracks, 48 minutes, self-released on limited vinyl and every streaming platform. Two singles lead the way: “Underwater” on September 18 and “Rewire” on October 2. The band played ten cities across Ontario and Quebec from September 17, closing at The Rivoli in Toronto on October 10.

What the record is about

Inevitable is about staying human in a world built to numb you. Machines convince us of what we want without even asking. The feed never runs out, and the answers arrive before the questions. The record asks what is left of a person when the noise never stops: dopamine preying on insecurities, grief never said out loud, seeking danger to satisfy, 2 a.m. self-talk sessions, parental anxieties, and rioting in numbers. Will we merge with technology or reject it? The album asks the question in its own arrangements, weaving synths and electronic atmospheres through modern and classical instruments, and weighs what we stand to gain against what we stand to lose. It ends in awe of what might still be possible. The title is the verdict. Whatever is coming is coming. What’s left of us remains undecided.

The band’s name is the method: two states that are not supposed to coexist and do anyway, present in the moment while imagining what could be. For Sasha Kristoff, who lives with Type 2 narcolepsy, it is also literal. The songs hold conflicting ideas and ask you to sit with both: isolated while connected, hopeful while scared, love through loss. Tracks often hold both, earning their intimate and massive moments. Canadian Beats called it “a quiet confession turning into a widescreen catharsis.” The band calls it duality, and the music revolves around it.

Inevitable was produced by Awake & Dreaming, mixed by Jay Dufour, 9x Juno Award winner (July Talk, Finger Eleven, Billy Talent), and mastered by João Carvalho (Rush, The Tragically Hip, Alexisonfire). The band is Sasha Kristoff (vocals, piano), Stefan Schneider (guitar, synth), Phil Lee (bass) and Ryan Dugal (drums). Their singles to date have earned more than 50 reviews from 37 outlets across 11 countries and 280K+ Spotify streams. They have opened for Rough Trade at Toronto’s El Mocambo, played The Delancey in New York, and opened for Blue Rodeo at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre in Owen Sound on October 8, 2026.

One ask: listen to the whole album before you quote. It was made with vinyl in mind. We would rather an honest pass than a polite review, so only take this on if the record genuinely lands for you.

Awake & Dreaming

The lead singles

“Underwater”

Out now · September 18, 2026

The album’s 2 a.m. self-talk session about letting go of what is dragging you down. “Let it go or let it swallow you whole, like a whale floating too far underwater.” Massive and alone, calling out in a code nobody hears.

There is no drop. The song floats. Choruses at 0:55 and 2:01; from 2:41 the water rises and the words stop.

“Rewire”

Out now · October 2, 2026

The dopamine loop we live inside, turned into a chorus. “Inspire me. Desire me. Admire me. Rewire me” repeats until it curdles into “I’m bored.” The bridge flips the mantra into the confession underneath it: “Rewire me so I can feel again.”

Track 2, directly after the opener’s “part of the machine.” The album’s technology thread made physical.

Tracklist and listening notes

  1. 01I U Me4:42The thesis of the record: “I am you and you are me.” When the noise is unbearable, you are not alone in it. The first verse also opens the album’s other thread, “flesh and blood and part of the machine.”
  2. 02RewireSingle · Out now3:45The dopamine loop as a chorus. “Inspire me. Desire me. Admire me. Rewire me” repeats until it curdles into “I’m bored.” The bridge reveals the human vulnerabilities underneath being preyed upon: “Rewire me so I can feel again.”
  3. 03Old Ghosts6:05The song that broke through. A duet between voice and piano, the piano playing the ghost: always there, never quite reaching the vocal. Pre-chorus lifts at 1:05, chorus at 1:36. “Old ghosts haunt me like things I never said.”
  4. 04Antidote3:46Desire and danger, refusing to resolve. Who is the predator and who is the prey? Chorus one (1:06) strips to synth, drums and voice; chorus two (2:23) adds the guitars; the climax at 3:08 is a pulse check, “I’m still breathing.”
  5. 05Cold Shoulder4:25A whispered taunt answered by a riot chant. Held-down verses, then the drop at 2:20 trades “go on, give me the cold shoulder” for “come on, give us.” From 2:52 the bridge stacks crowd, organ and guitar under “I’m gonna dance in the street while it’s burning” until the band cuts out at 4:19 and one voice finishes the chant alone.
  6. 06UnderwaterSingle · Out now3:48A 2 a.m. self-talk session: surface or sink. There is no drop; the song floats. Choruses at 0:55 and 2:01, then from 2:41 the water rises and there are no more words. “Let it go or let it swallow you whole, like a whale floating too far underwater.”
  7. 07Lights Down Low4:48The love of family, and the worry of letting a child go out into a tumultuous world. Love as the anchor in an unstable world, and one question when the show ends: “When the lights go down and the curtains close, who are you after the show?”
  8. 08Can’t Sleep7:05The band’s version of a love song, and the first song Awake & Dreaming ever wrote. Finding comfort through anxious times with the person you love: an acoustic melody guides it, the lead vocal stays optimistic and the backing vocals carry the anxiety. Opens on “Baby, I’m getting tired but I can’t sleep at night.”
  9. 09Faceless5:42Opens on a synth playing in a classical style. Technology in the present tense: “You cannot face what you’ve let out of the box.” A commentary on our warped pursuit of technology above all else. The ending launches into an augmented chant of worship: “These are the new gods. Bow down to the faceless.”
  10. 10Event Horizon3:49The closer, and the answer to “Faceless.” Supernovas, colliding black holes, symphonies in our minds. Where track 9 is dread, this is awe: the point of no return as a promise. The record ends on “It’s within our grasp.”
